Diamonds come naturally in every color of the rainbow. However most people are concerned with diamonds in the white range. The diamonds are rated in the white range from D (colorless) to Z (tinted).

  • D E F - colorless...
  • G H I J - near colorless...
  • K L M - faint color...
  • N O P Q R - very light yellow or champagne (light brown)...
  • S T U V W X Y Z - light yellow yellow or champagne (light brown)....

One mis-conception about color that I've come across is a belief that a diamond with color is less "clear". Color has nothing to do with clarity nor "clearity" it is simply a tint in the diamond. Please see picture... Here we see a diamond that is an S-T color. It is still clear and beautiful albeit with a tint. A diamond like this is 60-70% less than a similar colorless stone. Again, Pricing has less to do with how "good" or "bad" a diamond is than with how "desirable" it is. When you get to the lower colors ask me about the tint as they tend to range from yellow to light brown.

At the same time, a diamond in a vivid color is known as a "fancy" diamond and fetches top dollar among aficionados and collectors.
Diamonds are one of the very few gemstone types that come in a rainbow of natural colorations. Some colors, like red and green, are so rare they are hardly ever seen. Other colors, however, like canary yellow and pastel pink are more plentiful. They get their color from the addition of other elements in the pure carbon that creates diamonds. For example, the addition of boron creates a blue diamond; the inclusion of nitrogen produces yellow or green.
